Wanted: Loving Fur-ever Homes!

There's much to see here. So, so many WONDERFUL Pets! Take your time, look around, fall in love. When you see the perfect dog, cat, puppy or kitten for your family, click the "Adoption Application" button below the photos to start the adoption process.

If you would like to see more images of the pet you have fallen in love with, click the "Adopt-a-Pet" badge at right -- if we have more photos, that's where you can easily view them.

The Adoption Process

Please click the button below for a full description of the process of adopting a pet from us!

Adopting a pet from the Somerset-Pulaski County Humane Society is not like going to the county shelter to adopt a dog.  To ensure that each of our pets get the best possible home, you MUST complete an adoption application (links to the applications are found under the photos of our adoptable dogs and cats, respectively).  If you haven't already done so, please be sure to read about our Adoption Process completing an application.

The application process....

After you complete an application, there are several things that we will do:

1. We will check your personal references. Please be sure to list two personal references and include a phone number and an email address. (form asks for one; but we prefer two)

2. If you do not own your place of residence, we will call your landlord or leasing office.   Please check with them first to learn about their pet policy.

3. We will call your veterinarian for a reference.  We are looking for a history of annual exams, vaccines maintained routinely, annual heartworm tests and monthly preventatives.   We require the following:

  • All pets in the home must be spayed or neutered.
  • If your pet is not up to date on vaccines, please do not submit the application until you have scheduled an appointment with the vet to get your pets current on their vaccines.

4.  If you are a 1st-time pet owner, please include the name and phone number of the veterinarian you plan to use.

5.  Be sure to call your Vet(s), giving them permission to speak with us.

6.  We may need to do a home visit prior to approving your application, or post-adoption.  If this is not acceptable, please do not apply.

Luna is seeking a new home with a securely fenced back yard where she will be safe, when she's in the mood to be outside.  She's never been an "inside dog" but like all dogs adopted through the Somerset-Pulaski County Humane Society, it is a MUST that her adoptive family welcome her into their home to be part of the family.   She is incredibly loving and would do well with a single person or a couple. He is very laid back, a couch potato, loves attention, loves to eat, and loves treats.  He will be health checked by a vet, brought up to date on vaccines, and neutered before adopting out.  Old vet records show that he has had ear surgeries and he seems to have trouble hearing, but he is not deaf.

Rocky is just one of our "Silver Paws" pets.  Our Silver Paws for Silver Hearts program is a PERMANENT foster program ,  intended to match senior pets with senior humans that will provide a loving home for the pet for the rest of their days while SPCHS picks up the costs of food, toys, supplies and veterinary expenses!  While rocky is a little young to be a "silver paw", we have opted to make him eligible for this very special program due to his hearing loss.  Click here then scroll down a little to learn more about Silver Paws for Silver Hearts - there are some special requirements to be approved for this unique program, as SPCHS is committing to cover Rocky's expenses for what could be a VERY long time for the right Silver Heart!

On Sunday evening, June 26, this little Chihuahua was left on a porch in Kings Mountain with a note attached saying owners could no longer take care of her.  The porch happened to belong to the mom of  one of the ladies that works at one of the SPCHS veterinarian's offices. She contacted us to see if we could take her.  We were lucky to have a foster available so that we could  say "Yes!". She has been vaccinated, dewormed, given flea/tick preventative (she was covered with ticks), was HW and tickborne disease tested negative.  The porch owner was  calling her CindyLou so we left it at that (note left with her did not have her name on it).  She is guessed her to be 2 years old.  Presently she weighs 9.5 pounds -- a good weight for her is  around 15 pounds, so we will be helping her to put on some weight. She is very much a "velcro dog" -- she wants to be in her human's lap ALL the time.  CindyLou does fine with the other dogs in her foster home and hasn't bothered the cats.  It's a little early to be certain, but her foster mom thinks she is house-trained.

SPCHS was alerted to his plight by a concerned neighbor.  The owner agreed to surrender him to us.  Bob had been running loose, was shot with a pellet gun, sprayed with mace the day before we got him.  Even with all this suffering, Bob happily greeted his rescuers, totally enjoyed sitting in a lap and being petted for duration of the ride to his new foster home.  He's a very sweet boy, appears to be house trained, doesn't bother the cats in his foster home, and gets along well with the other dogs there.  This boy is an absolute gem, and is eligible to be a Silver Paw!

We've recently discovered that FRED has a food allergy -- chicken.  He can not have food that contains chicken, chicken meal or chicken by-products.  He does very well on foods that don't contain any of these -- but even sensitive tummy lamb and rice kibble with chicken meal does NOT agree with him.

As a dog, however, sweet Lando can't seem to catch  a break. He was adopted and returned twice -- because he is VERY high energy.  Even though we informed his previous adopters about his high energy level.... they didn't understand what we meant until they experienced the tornado that is Lando!  If you are not experienced with Jack Russell Terriers and swoon at his cuteness -- PLEASE research the breed! Lando would do well with someone that is willing to invest in training -- first obedience, then possibly agility!  He would have a blast with agility, needs a young active family that will teach him manners, indoors and outside.  He loves to snuggle, and loves interactive play and mind challenging games!  He's even cool with cats!  It would be super if he could find a home where he'd have a doggie brother or sister to help him burn off some of his energy.

My name is Walter.  I am a 7 year old neutered male.  I am also the neighborhood cat.  Until one day this nice couple showed me some loving, took care of my wounds and even fed me...everyday.  They take me to the vet and I got a shot. (Rabies)  I don't know of any other shots but I was altered years ago.  I stay in their house most of the time but I like to go outside to potty.  And then I find myself getting into trouble.  I am very territorial and do not like to share my property.  My people think I should be in a nice home where I can stay in all day and night. Preferably all by myself.   I am a silver paw... and would really like to have a silver heart to call my own.

Meet the Berry Family!  Momma is Elderbery, about 18 months old, combo test negative.  Poor Elderberry was clearly a house kitty, likely dumped because she was pregnant.  Her babies were born in a house under construction.  One of the workers alerted SPCHS to her plight, and one of our fosters jumped in to help! She has Bright green eyes and is VERY affectionate but still a bit food insecure.

Her kittens -- Boysenberry, Blackberry, Dewberry, Goji Berry and Huckleberry are just 6 weeks old, so not quite ready to be adopted yet, but will be ready for their furever homes in late June/early July.  These cuties are sure to go fast, so click the button below to get your application in NOW!

Garfield just happened to be at our veterinarian when a kitten came in that needed a transfusion.  He gave up his own blood to save a tiny kitten that was almost dead from flea anemia. The transfusion saved its life.

Toby is neutered and he’s had his rabies vaccine, been treated him ear mites and he’s wears a Seresto collar. Amelia was found as a very tiny kitten on the shoulder of HWY 90 near Monticello, KY. She was emaciated dirty and starving with an upper respiratory infection.
It was a bit 'touch and go' to save her life and for two days she pooped gravel indicating how desperate she had been for food and  had swallowed stones too.
Under loving foster care, she grew loving, incredibly gorgeous, playful.
A family applied to adopt her as a birthday gift for their 12 year old daughter.  Nothing indicated red flags in the application. Financially secure, nice home, educated professional parents, four children.
Amelia went to live there and within seven months they called wanting to return her saying she was aggressive and acting out.
This seemed preposterous but her foster went to retrieve her and saw the actions of the four children in their handling of Amelia and knew immediately what had happened.
These children had no structure; no rules and had tormented and harassed this poor beautiful feline to the point she did lash out in survival and fear mode.
The damage was severe and Amelia just like other animals and humans who suffer trauma has PTSD.
She needs space, peace and quiet and to just be a cat on HER own terms. She doesn't like other animals now despite being playful as a kitten with dogs and cats. She reacts poorly to sudden movement and who can blame her?
Her forever human will need to give her space, endless patience and require nothing from Amelia that she's not willing to give. Time, love and patience will win her over but...................
What animals suffer at the hands of humans is disgraceful and appalling.

Miss D'Lynn is a special needs girl with quite the history!  Found taped into a box and left on the front porch of a woman with a giant breed service dog, when she was just a baby puppy, Miss D'Lynn has grown into a BEAUTIFUL, spirited, high-energy,  70-ish Great Pyrenees mix dog!  At almost 3 years old, D'Lynn is spayed, up to date on all shots, crate trained and  house-trained.  However, she will need a very special INDOOR home.  She sufferers severe separation anxiety, and storm/fireworks anxiety.  Her fear of storms is so intense that medication is required.  She is also an escape artist (she will escape from a sturdy crate if left alone too long), and she has an intense prey drive, so we recommend a cat-free home and also one without small dogs.  A secure, continuous 4' fence (minimum) is also a requirement, as she will look for a spot that might have uneven ground, making that spot just a little shorter than 4', and she will jump it!

She is GREAT with her foster sister (a great pyrenees mix) her former foster brother (a doberman mix that was adopted) -- so other big dogs are ok -- in fact, she's also good with goats, and needs the companionship of other animals in her new furever home.

His front leg was too badly shattered to be saved, so it was amputated.
After a brief recovery stay at the vet he moved to a medical foster where he is recovering well and is now cleared for normal activity and adoption.   His foster reports he is very loving and, of course, as most animals who suffer these horrific injuries, he runs, plays and challenges the other cats in his foster home.  Only humans think there is a 'disability'. Burt certainly doesn't.

Due to the overwhelming response to Rocky being in need, we are not accepting any new applications for him at this time.  Thank you to all that have applied to adopt  him or be his Silver Heart!  We are actively reviewing  all the applications we have received for him.

Say "Hello" to Rocky!

Rocky's owner died and now he needs a home.  Rocky is a full-blooded English Bulldog almost 6 years old. He was born on 6/2/2016  and he weighs 60-65 pounds.
